Same thing happened with Soriano.

Can you give examples of politicians, businessmen or rich people that you know that are actually good and honest human beings? I think most Filipinos know that Enrile is the devil incarnate, but which are decent behind the camera?

Also, you said in a previous post that you were "Old rich". You probably have a street named after your family. Can you tell me more about what it means to be "old rich" in the Philippines? What do you people aspire for? Are you guys just content with spending your parent's money living in a studio apartment in Brooklyn? What are your hopes for this country?

Rich people that are actually good...

JAZA is a stand up guy. incredibly down to earth. Does not flaunt his wealth (nor does he need to). Dresses simply but if you're into watches, you'll see his watch costs more than your car! Can't blame him plus he's a huge Patek guy.

Brooklyn? Haha Upper west/East or bust, my friend. Tan, Sy, Gotianun etc are rich, but they do not belong to the old rich as the old Spanish families no matter how rich they are.

Preservation of wealth is important, almost as important as family. Its not uso to just be a lazy bum and live off the family fortune. I can be content with spending my parents money, but do I deserve it? Thats incredibly wasteful and selfish.

Thank you for answering!

It's interesting that you only mentioned Ayala. I guess that means most rich people you know must be assholes hahah

It's also curious that you only mentioned preservation of wealth. Do young kids of the "old rich" not feel a sense of obligation to a country that has given them so much? How many actually do charity work or public service? Is the routine path just a few years partying in Europe or the United States then settling down to a cozy job in your father's business in Makati?

I hope that you don't get too offended by this, but do you think that the country would be better off without the "old rich"? I want to know your honest opinion on this. It just seems like a lot of you people got and maintain your fortunes off the backs of exploited Filipinos. Do you ever feel guilty that you can afford to live your opulent lifestyles because of a centuries old system of oppression?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming you for poverty, but do you think that you have a responsibility, more so than most Filipinos because of your wealth and privilege, to change things for the better?

How about up north? Singson and company? Enrile's illegal import business in Cagayan? I know a wealthy family who's in cahoots with him through that business. (For some redditors in central luzon -- they own a very large market in the central luzon cellphone business)

Ahh Singson. I deleted my previous post regarding him. Okay house in Corinthians. The first thing you see when you enter his house is a huge painting of himself. How tacky can you get.

There was a time he bought a Fortuner for his daughter. Got carnapped while the daughter was eating in a restaurant. When it was reported in hte news it was Singons daughter, the same night, he put a hit on who stole it. Next day, it was returned.

He was denied membership in Polo despite Inigo Zobel being his sponsor. Doesn't matter if you have money or you can pay the 20+M fee. Tere are interviews, background checks etc. He was invovled in a controversy that time, the killing of his Metrowalk partner, the hot headed Umale. He's the suspect. I think he's a member now though.

The Enriles are a blight upon the Philippines. Walang-hiya talaga. Do you think Bongbong would own up to Makoy's crimes? I'm pretty sure BBM would eventually run for President. I think he's a great guy, but Makoy's sins are too heavy a burden.

Another question: how does the rich choose their yayas and drivers? Is there an agency or something? Those jobs require a lot of trust and confidentiality!

  • [-]
  • j_-
  • 5 Points
  • 08:09:33, 16 February

The Marcoses will never own up to their fathers crimes. They use the "don't blame the children for the sins of the father" a lot.

No agencies. Referrals from old, old helpers if needed, like someone they know quite well or a family member in need of a job. Our helpers have been with us for decades. There are background checks of course. Our family helps our helpers children, too. They do so much work for us the least we could do is pay for the schooling of the children, give them a couple of household items such as fridges etc.

Throwaway account, of course.

Which one of the Napoles kids studied in ISM? I heard she was ostracized in one way or another because of her tacky stuff. Lol, nouveau riche.

What's your take on this whole Tuason appearance? Legit or just another distraction? How do you think this whole Napoles debacle will end? JPE just won't die, holy fuck.

How does the old rich make money? I mean, the Sys, Tans and MVP are relatively new players and they're pretty much public. Who are the Rothschilds of the PH?

  • 07:06:37, 16 February

Not OP, but I remember that she went to either La Salle Zobel or Woodrose for a while, and I guess transferred to ISM afterwards. My ISM friends disliked her because she was the type of girl who would try to buy your friendship through trying to be like one of those born into wealth, but she lacked class. She was also excruciatingly tacky.

I also got to meet her a few times, and really, she and her family always wanted to feel like the richest people in the room. I can't even describe how ludicrous they were in their pursuit of social acceptance.

The youngest studies in ISM Jeane, Choy and Jo went to Zobel.

Tuason appearance, part legit.

As mentioned in the old thread, Soriano family made their money thanks to San Miguel. They also owns anscor, which leased Aman to the Razons, aviation etc. Zobels are the Rothschilds. They own everything. Water, Telecoms, Malls, Makati. They are the closest we have to royalty. Then in Cebu you have the Aboitizes and now in Davao you have the Floirendos

Also, a huge misconception in this country is that MVP owns SMart/PLDT He's nothing more than an employee to the powerful Salim family of Indonesia

  • [-]
  • j_-
  • 11 Points
  • 08:56:40, 16 February

We don't choose our friends. We're just more comfortable with the same circle. We all grew up together, our parents have lunch ,same interests and all that. Also, it can be incredibly off-putting to people who aren't in our bracket when we talk about going on trips, shopping etc that costs 5-6 figures. It becomes awkard and it comes off as gloating and creates tension and ultimately, jealousy even though that is not my intention.

That doesn't mean I don't have friends who aren't as blessed as I am though. For example, I have friends who are dumbfounded with the fact that me and a couple of friends were planning a week long getaway with a budget of at least 6 figures each. Or to a lesser extent, not really thinking twice or looking at the prices if we like something / going out to eat at a restaurant since budget really isn't an issue. My last girlfriend comes from a modest family but it was tough for her to get me something since, in her own words, what can I get someone who can get anything.

Sorry if that was condescending/pretentious.

Before I met them, I had this preconceived notion that the 1% are assholes, but they're just as down-to-earth as any other group of friends.

I was in Manchester last year for Fashion's Night Out, couple of friends and I got to hook up with male models thanks to our friends who work in the fashion industry.

Best sex of my life. I would not get the amount of hot dick I get if not for the fact this lifestyle has opened up a huge pool of hot guys for me.

TBH, the characterization of PNoy as a puppet is not very fair. He's a little more political than I'd like but he's backed policies that are unpopular on their face, but sound.

Cory, though - the valuable items she threw away weren't just of the physical sort. She practically junked the entire infrastructure plan formed during the Marcos years - which is why we're in the hole we're in now.

no problem man, i just rage better in ilokano.

basically here's a flowchart for a career in politics:

1 Start small in the province, preferably a small town, 4th-5th class municipality, a bigger-ish land area, with a voting population of less than 5000 people. Much better kung marami kapamilya. i-register sa SEC ang KAMAGANAK INC.

2 Buy all the votes. All of it, kahit ayaw magpabayad, bigyan pa rin ng pera. Range of 3000-5000 pesos per vote. (e.g. 3000 pesos x 3000 pesos = 9M.) 3k-5k is a lot of money in the poor provinces, especially for a family who has a minimum of 5 voting members.

3 Ready your goons, armed to the teeth, to make sure the people vote for you, para hindi lugi. Ready your goons to kill any opponents. See, Bingbong Crisologo and Chavit Singson for example.

4 ???

5 Profit. IRA's for provincial towns range from 12M-15M/year. The bigger the land area, the bigger the share in IRA. Elections happen every 3 years.

6 Rinse and Repeat 3x for 9 years. After that, pagkandidatohin si misis bilang kapalit mo na mayor, dapt bise na sya sa panahon na to, para me dagdag income. Kumandidato bilang Governor o Congressman. Mas mataas na mananakaw. Don't be an Ampatuan. Wag magpaka-tacky ang tasteless sabi ni OP. See, Estradas and Revillas.

Aim High. Steal Big. Live like a god! Wag lang pa-obvious at pampam.

I'm not sure why some people here are excited to suck this guy's dick.

I completely lost respect when this guy when he said that he'd vote for Bong Bong. Clearly, this guy has wealth and enlightenment.

Secondly, he always says that the old rich do lots of good but don't advertise it. Hmmm. When I think of Bill Gates and all the good he does, I don't find him obnoxious. In fact, I am impressed that he's using his status to bring focus to issues and to also encourage people to support good causes.

It's likely that many among the Philippine rich don't have the intellectual capacity to actually tackle problems by looking at root causes and using their money/prestige to effect systemic change. Their idea of doing good is still of the patronage kind - money here, money there but not doing something beyond giving money to actually make a real, lasting difference.

And will the 1% actually go against their kind and interest knowing that sometimes, going against your classes' interest is something good for the Philippines?

As to his expensive trips - -that's fine with me. I mean - you're free to use your wealth the way you please. But I wonder if you even report the wealth you use as part of your income and pay income tax. When you use your parents money, that is income - - your income. Sure, your parents may pay taxes on their investments, etc. But when you use their money, that is your income. I doubt you pay tax on this money.

It is interesting how he looks down on people with new wealth. He forgets that old money was once upon a time new money too. And likely, if we actually figure out the beginnings of many of these old rich people - - -there will be some very interesting stories (maybe their forebear was a criminal from spain, etc.) In 2-3 generations, the new wealth he looks down on will be old wealth.

Also, I wonder what he thinks about smart people who make lots of money because of their smarts and hard work. Will he scoff at them too as new money?

As to opening new businesses, I doubt these people have the smarts to start new, innovative businesses, or fund super smart people (who aren't rich) to form new business (e.g., silicon valley model).

The problem with the Philippine 1% is that they are not a force of true enlightenment. Will these people actually give up 90% of their wealth and give it to charity and just give enough for their kids?

http://www.businessinsider.com/tycoons-not-leaving-money-to-their-kids-2013-8?op=1

Lest this dude thinks I'm jealous of him - - I am not. I am not poor. My parents were professionals and I had a good solid upbringing. I was not deprived growing up. And I also like to spend every now and then. But I also have my priorities and I have progressive views - views I somewhat had when I was in the Philippines but became more pronounced when I lived/studied/worked in the US and Canada.

To me - - the very small 1% controlling a huge chunk of Philippine wealth and a huge population - -more than 50% owning just maybe 1% of Philippine wealth is something anathema to a true meritocracy.

The only way to solve this is to actually grow the pie and grow the middle class - - -and also decreasing the wealth disparity. This means that somehow, the 1% will lose some of their wealth if a more equitable society is to arise from the Philippines.

I am sure this dude will do everything in his power to maintain the status quo. Of course, I am not saying that he should become poor. But I doubt this guy understands that if the Philippines is to become a true, modern country, then his class would somehow have to make decisions against their interests but which are good for the interests of the Philippines.

You're entitled to your opinion, but there is always a 1% in every country. They are a part of every capitalist society, and like it or not, they won't "lose wealth" voluntarily plus they hire the best lawyers in town to evade taxes. New and innovative businesses are almost non-existent in the Philippines because they will be barricaded by some holdings corporation of some subsidiary or the Lopezes or the Ayalas or whatever corporations are there. It's a hard pill to swallow, but the 1% are an institution that won't come down anytime soon.

The utilities you have-- cellphone data provider, electricity, water, the land that you own, the malls that you go to, the condominiums you buy, the politicians you elect, they're all the same 20 or so families. It's unfair, in one sense, because our countrymen are languishing in the provinces. But that's life, amigo.

Yes, there will always be a 1%.

It is the quality of the 1% that's important.

Also, a huge disparity between the 1% and the rest is not something that a true democracy should aspire for.

A true modern country has:

a. True social mobility because of institutional support

b. A big middle class

c. A wealth disparity that's not of the gilded-age type.
