"If black people dont want to be called it they should stop calling each other that. No one should really say it." creates quite a stir in /Funny. (np.reddit.com)

That could get pretty out of hand for small communities, especially ones that operate as a safe space. For example, I'm pretty sure that /r/blackladies has already heard every dumb cracker-ass whitey's opinion on why slurs aren't actually slurs. Arriving at their doorstop to tell them so can really fuck up the discourse and community environment.

Seriously, it's more about the principle that insulting people for their race is offensive, regardless of the words used. There also a bit of hypocrisy when a mod does it considering SRD's "zero tolerance policy on slurs or hate speech." While not always racist, it's certainly racially insensitive.

cracker-ass whitey isn't really hate speech. I don't think anyone is really offended by words like that, certainly not in the same sense a minority is offended by a slur. I don't agree with the "you can't be racist to white people" idea of SRS but I certainly don't think anybody feels oppressed when they hear the word honkey. He was probably being a bit tongue in cheek, in any case.

Slurs are called slurs because of the pejorative intent that's usually behind their use, not the effect they have on people. Someone can always try to offend and fail. I haven't heard an argument that "cracker" or "whitey" aren't slurs. SRS probably has some "slur = pejorative + power" definition since they ban for slurs but use ones directed at whites liberally. I doubt they could find any support for their definition, though.

Right but white people aren't an oppressed class. I mean they're slurs but as a white guy I couldn't imagine taking the same offense as a gay person being called a faggot. I don't think prejudice + power = racism but I do think it equals oppression.

But I dunno it seems less harsh than "Asshole" on the scale of insults, and "nigger" is definitely a lot further along. I just don't think takeittocirclejerk was actually spewing "hate speech" as the rules say, anyway.

I made an exception for myself to the zero tolerance policy, because, I mean, c'mon, let's be real, white people are awful

Agreed. Especially since people brigading tend to go post in smaller subs with the same attitude that they might post in askreddit. I remember when /r/femalefashionadvice was linked in bestof and the thread was just filled with really inane/creepy comments.

yeah that's a good point. It all feels very silly when people get all twisted up cause an /r/videos or /r/adviceanimals thread was brigaded though. Guess you can't have your cake and eat it too
